This Austin dive bar engagement session shows that engagement photos don’t have to follow a standard, natural light formula. Chris & Reagan chose Seven Grand because it’s a place that already fits into how they spend time together, and we kept the entire session on flash and indoors.
The low light, dark interiors, and dive bar details worked well for a film-heavy approach. Shooting mostly on film allowed for more contrast, visible grain, and softer edges — giving the images a raw, documentary feel rather than a highly polished look.
Instead of building the session around poses, we focused on what they’d normally do there: order drinks, play pool, move through the space, and interact naturally. That structure keeps things from feeling stiff and gives the photos more rhythm and real moments to work with.
If you’re not into open fields and sunset backdrops, choosing a location you already like – bars, coffee shops, record stores, bowling alleys – can make your engagement session feel more relaxed and unique!
A dive bar session in Austin is a solid option for couples who want something low-key, straightforward, and true to how they spend their typical weekends!
